Fire classification: REI or EI?

To be considered fireproof, a door must meet two fundamental characteristics:

Self-closing: the door must close by itself using devices such as spring hinges, door closers or counterweights in the case of sliding doors.

The fire resistance of a closing element is expressed as a period in minutes, during which the window retains its sealing and/or thermal insulation properties.

There are different regulations that determine the classification of fire doors:

European Standard EN 16034

Specific legislation for each country, for Italy it is UNI 9723

The European and Italian regulations are very similar: in fact, they present a similar classification which is expressed as follows ("EI" for EN 16034, "REI" for UNI 9723):

• Resistance: the load-bearing capacity of an element, which must not be compromised in the event of a fire (not applicable for fire doors, in fact removed from European legislation).
• Airtightness: the ability to retain fire. This does not mean the door is sealed, as the common sense of the term suggests.
• Thermal insulation: that is, the ability to reduce heat transmission towards the face not exposed to the fire.
